The Benefits Of Laptops And Wireless Cards :: Technology Computers Papers

The Benefits Of Laptops And Wireless Cards The CEO of Viacom/Blockbuster was once cited for saying, â€Å"The data superhighway is an earth street that won’t be cleared over until 2025† (The Freeman Institute). Clearly, this was an incorrect statement. The data age is as of now at its pinnacle. The utilization of innovation and the Internet are a basic piece of advanced education. In the previous scarcely any years, universities have started giving workstations to all understudies. A couple of schools have even evolved programs that utilization remote system cards to get to the Internet from anyplace on their grounds. Giving understudies a PC and a remote system card has expanded the learning prospects at schools across the country. This is an exceptionally ongoing thought being drilled by many schools around the United States. In any case, this thought is one of contention. Regardless of the numerous advantages, these PCs remain imperfect. They make issues, for example, support endeavors, deterioration esteem, study hall abuse, personnel preparing, and raised educational cost (Beebe 2-8). Another issue is whether the PCs really advantage the understudies or simply occupy them. There are numerous advantages of utilizing PCs over ordinary PCs. A portion of the advantages incorporate transportability, get to, PowerPoint Presentations, slideshows, email, utilizing the Internet, and online notes. These preferences are assembled to make an extremely conservative and advantageous PC (Shafer). Perhaps the greatest bit of leeway is versatility. A Minnesota State understudy Timothy Huebsch says, â€Å"On a decent day, we don’t must be cooped up† (Ojeda-Zapata). One can take their PC to the library, cafeteria, or even to class. The understudies have all the upsides of a PC without sitting at a work area chipping away at assignments. Understudies at Buena Vista University have the ability of getting to the Internet from the habitation lobbies, football arena, and even the docks on the lake. At the end of the day, it is a significant comfort for all the understudies to have a PC to compose a paper as opposed to holding up in a line to utilize a PC lab (Dean). Rick Shafer, who is Buena Vista’s Director of Integrated Technology, sums up the benefit of movability by saying, â€Å"The principle motivation behind the PC program was with the goal that understudy could approach PCs. Before this program understudies needed to hold up in line regularly to utilize a PC.

Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter - 872 Words

Hawthorne’s novel, The Scarlet Letter, is a wonderful piece of writing that thoroughly analyzes the critiques and flaws of early Puritan society. Many enjoyable factors are present, including the heavy and enlightening use of symbols to develop Hawthorne’s revolutionary viewpoint as well as the strong portrayal of the characters that challenges ideas of the time. However, the book also has some flaws; most notable including the fact that the writing is an archaic writing style and thus is difficult to parse through as compared to more recent texts. It also lacks many strong motifs – only two or three are continuously present throughout the book, but the total number of motifs briefly developed is in the tens. Altogether the novel is an incredibly enjoyable read and continuously points out problems in Hawthorne’s society that may even still be present today. The novel could use more consistent motif coverage and rely less heavily on older writing styles, bu t altogether the book is quite splendid. Many published critics also share these sentiments. One of the first criticisms published on the book after it was released was by Henry James, a renowned American author who explored themes of change and ideological shifts. In his criticism, he notes that Hawthorne â€Å"†¦ liked to fraternize with plain people, to take them on their own terms, and put himself, if possible, into their shoes†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (James). Intercultural Communication Stumbling Blocks By Samovar,...

Intercultural Communication Introduction According to the articles Intercultural communication stumbling blocks by Barna and Intercultural communication by Samovar, Porter, McDaniel Roy, describe the various challenges that are faced between communications of two individuals who come from different cultures. Notably, challenges that are faced by different people who come from different cultures exist due to the problem of the difference between the cultural norms. For instance, what is acceptable in the United States as a form of communication is entirely different from what is acceptable in Japan as a form of communication. Additionally, challenges that exist in intercultural communication may be due to the prejudices that individuals†¦show more content†¦The Vietnamese student thought that Americans are superficial for the way talk as well as smiling too much. On the other hand, An American Girl viewed that the international students most of them were quite unfriendly. According to this article, there are stumbl ing blocks that exist in intercultural communication. First is the language whereby there may exist different interpretation concerning a particular vocabulary or sentence (Barna, 1994). For instance, according to this article, when a Japanese hear that ‘won’t you have some tea? He may respond ‘no meaning that he is interested in taking tea which may mean to an American person that he is not interested in taking the tea. Thus, this may act as a stumbling block. The second stumbling block is nonverbal signs and symbols. In case there exist different meaning of the non-verbal signs and symbols, communication is hindered. Summary of Prejudice in Intercultural Communication This article describes the way individuals react negatively to other people without any factual material or direct contact. In other words, it describes the way some people have a negative attitude towards other people from a particular culture due to the prejudice. The Comedic Wave Free Essays

During the time of Shakespeare, it was understood that a play described as a comedy would be one that â€Å"implies a positive understanding of human experience [. . . We will write a custom essay sample on The Comedic Wave or any similar topic only for you Order Now .] a marriage or at least some kind of union or reunion that resolves the conflict and brings the characters into a state of harmony† (McDonald, 2001, 81). This describes the storyline of Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet: it is a comedy that by modern standards would be sub-categorized as dark because much of the storyline isn’t humorous; however, the culminating events include a reunion and (a precarious) harmony among the feuding Montagues and Capulets.   The plot of Romeo and Juliet is not unique: the concept of—boy meets girl—boy courts girl—boy loses girl—is the center of many other stories, but the impact left by the wave of comedy which is created by such plot lines makes the theme one that is timeless. It seems inevitable that Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet will overcome the feuding of their families, marry, and live happily ever-after; however, this is not to be, for the lovers are â€Å"star-crossed† (Romeo and Juliet, Prologue).   The play builds to its dà ©nouement—the dual suicides of Romeo and Juliet—by taking the audience though the lives of the two youngsters as they attempt to overcome their familial origins.   By the time the audience realizes that the two lovers will unite only in death, the impact is profound. (Juliet) What’s here? A cup, clos’d in my true love’s hand? Poison, I see, hath been his timeless end. [. . . .] O happy dagger! [Snatches Romeo’s dagger.] This is thy sheath; there rest, and let me die. She stabs herself and falls [on Romeo’s body].   (V. iii. 205-206; 212-215) It is a wave that has been built slowly throughout the play—one that remains with an audience member perhaps indefinitely. The war between the Montagues and the Capulets has raged for years, and part of the tragedy which becomes darkly comedic in this piece is that the barrier that stands between Romeo and Juliet is nothing but a word: specifically a surname.   During her famous balcony speech, Juliet, thinking aloud to herself says, O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name.   (II.i.74–76) Juliet is asking the universe not where her love is, but why Romeo is a Montague.   Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations would describe the situation thusly: â€Å"one might say: the ostensive definition explains the use—the meaning—of the word when the overall role of the word in language is clear† (Wittgenstein, L, #30).   In other words, the reason Romeo and Juliet cannot wed has been determined by the definition—the â€Å"role†Ã¢â‚¬â€their respective surnames play. A truly effective comedy builds slowly, creates tension-filled expectation, and comes to a resolution that leaves a reader or an audience member with a long-lasting memory of the event.   Shakespeare creates this in Romeo and Juliet by establishing the â€Å"meaning† of the surnames of his characters, and placing each into his/her respective â€Å"role.† References McDonald, R.   (2001).   The Bedford companion to Shakespeare: An introduction with documents.   (2nd ed.).   Boston: Bedford. Oedipus The King Essays (561 words) - Oedipus The King, Oedipus

Oedipus The King In Greek mythology the oracles or gods are rarely wrong in their predictions of the future. Yet the characters still try to fight the predictions. Do their personalities and traits decide their future, or does fate take its course no matter what? Oedipus was a shrewd man furnished with wit and intellect, yet his lack of insight (the ability to see and understand clearly the inner nature of himself) and his arrogance led to his demise, not fate. Oedipus's aret? (an exceptional ability or gift) was unravelling riddles, and solving any puzzles with ease. He had a surplus of the aptitude to look outward, but unfortunately he had a deficiency of the ability to look inward. This talent of looking outward made him renowned for deciphering riddles and mysteries. Yet when Tiresias appears and speaks in riddles, Oedipus cannot solve them because of his lack of insight. Tiresias's riddles are clear in what they state, but Oedipus cannot understand them because he doesn't know himself well enough. Tiresias conveys, All ignorant! And I refuse to link my utterance with a downfall such as yours.(Pg.42) At this point in the play, Oedipus still cannot perceive who the murderer of King Laius is, even though the riddle is obvious. Oliver 2 Oedipus has the ability to comprehend the riddles, but he won't allow himself to accept the truth. When Oedipus saved Thebes from The Sphinx, he answered this difficult puzzle. The Sphinx demanded, What creature is it that walks on four feet in the morning, on two at noon, and on three in the evening? With his eminent mastery of riddles and having an open mind, Oedipus replied, It is Man. As a child he crawls on four. When he grows up he walks upright on his two feet, and in old age he leans on a staff.1 This puzzle is far more complex than Tiresias's rudimentary riddles, so Oedipus has the ability to solve the riddles but cannot let himself do so, because of his pomposity. Oedipus is so arrogant that he can't believe that he could possibly have done anything wrong. He suffered from the sin of hubris. That is, he was very vain, and conceited. No matter how straightforward Tiresias's riddles were, Oedipus's pride wouldn't let him solve them. Finally, Tiresias came right out and said what he meant without a riddle, and Oedipus still couldn't accept that he did anything wrong. Tiresias simply stated, I say, you murdered the man whose murderer you require. (Pg.37) Following that remark from Tiresias, Oedipus shielded himself by accusing his brother in law, Creon (his uncle in reality), of forcing these insinuations from Tiresias. Of course, this wasn't true, it was just a classic example of Oedipus's arrogance trying to defend itself. Oedipus's expiration was caused simply because of his arrogance and his lack of self knowledge. He didn't understand himself well enough. He could unravel any mystery besides Oliver 3 his own existence. All of his life Oedipus had solved mysteries and puzzles about subjects other than himself. Now that he was faced with riddles accusing him of something, his own arrogance kept him from the truth. Oedipus would have solved Tiresias's riddles instantaneously if it weren't for his pride, and lack of insight. Finally, the truth is forced on Oedipus with outstanding evidence, presented by the messenger, and the shepherd, so he must accept his destiny. Was he not able to solve Tiresias's riddles because his arrogance wouldn't allow him to, or did he recognize the answers immediately, his vanity not allowing him to acknowledge the truth?

The Ravens Impact Essays

The Ravens Impact Essays The Ravens Impact Essay The Ravens Impact Essay The Raven, made a significant impact, not only in American literature, but the world as well. With Poes influence, short fictions were more accepted in literary circles. Edgar Allan Poes contributions to American literature have become increasingly more prominent as the years have passed. Poe was known to be the first of many to include death and despair in American literature, both of which you can find in the short poem, The Raven. Poes habit of including death in his works had something to do with the themes of his works. Once something is lost, you can never get it back, and you dont really know what you have, until you lose it. I think everyone can agree with these statements. Its important to know what you have around you, and how much beauty it holds to help you embrace it. Poes theme behind the poem was beauty. The poem being dark and sad had something to do with Poes notions. He believed that sadness was the highest manifestation of beauty, as beauty to ones soul can bring it to tears. The way we think, and the reason why we do the things we do is all to satisfy our cravings of beauty and being ideal, Poe believes. Idealism also resides in the poem, as Poe uses a melancholic tone, as it is the most legitimate of all poetic tones. This tells us a little something about our human nature and our tendencies. This particular poem hold truths to many human societies. As the poem goes on to exhibit the mans various questions, can see how he almost finds joy in despair. This particular style of writing and theater is in many movies today like American Beauty, as Ricky can see God in the eyes of a corpse. This can also be displayed in a high school relationship between two young teens, as to how one is attracted to someone who may not treat their partner well at all. The popularity of, The Raven, sparked the masses to continuously recite and even parody the short poem. You may find a The Simpsons episode which played out the scene of Poes, The Raven. This piece will be continued to be remembered as one of literature most memorable poems.

Operation Fine Girl Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Operation Fine Girl - Essay Example lt my stomach turn, I wanted to throw up as I sat listening to the accounts of how parents were killed or made to watch as their daughters were raped. As the video stated, Sierra Leone is classified as the poorest country in the world and it shows in the way that they treat their women and the way that a majority of the country obviously lives in abject poverty. I feel that the United Nations Human Rights Commission should step into this situation and put an end to the atrocities and sexual abuse against women. The women of Sierra Leone need to be saved and shown that they actually have a future even though they are rape victims. They need to be taught that the rape was not the end of they are. Rather, it is only the beginning of their lives. They are not the enemy of their country but its backbone. They are not sex slaves, but women who deserve all the respect that should be accorded to them as the givers of life. They do not deserve to be raped, held hostage for years on end, and then discarded like a piece of

Canadian Liberalism vs Canadian Conservatism Essay

Canadian Liberalism vs Canadian Conservatism - Essay Example At one side, liberals are progressively change and reform oriented. On the other, conservatives rely on self-induced political conduct that is relatively resistant to massive and outright reforms. In the Canadian context, liberal and conservative parties hugely disagree on governance, economy, and taxes. Notably this disconnection can be explained by the left-right ideology. The Liberal Party takes policy positions that advocate for equality of opportunity, true fiscal responsibility, and relatively raised taxes for a sustainable economy (Canadian Liberal Party, 2013). On the other hand, the Conservative Party stands for balanced budgets, Canadians-driven economy, and low taxes; leave more money with the Canadians (Canadian Conservative Party, 2013). In the light of the liberal-conservative policy positions, the left-right ideology comes into play. Progressing and reforming the economy may necessitate economic changes in the country, taxes included. The conservative view of creating jobs, promoting economic growth, and ensuring long-term economic prosperity (Canadian Conservative Party, 2013) may not necessary result in equality of opportunities. Also, leaving more money in the hands of Canadians may negate the balanced budget realization. Liberal approach to these matters makes the Liberal Party’s ideology more leftish and essentially aligned with its social, economic, and political policy

The name suggests that Blanche is a very innocent and pure person. When she appears in scene one, â€Å"she is daintily dressed in a white suit with a fluffy bodice, necklace and earrings of pearl, white gloves and a hat†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Sc.1 p. 2073). White is also the color of light and represents perfection and virginity but throughout the play it becomes obvious that Blanche cannot call any of the traits of her name her own. She is a seductive and promiscuous woman. Only the illusory image, which she tries to create for herself, suggests these traits, but her true nature is not like that at all. She constantly tries to hide her embarrassing past from her new acquaintances, because she fears that they might not accept her anymore. In order to maintain her apparent social status among her new neighbors and friends, she builds an intertwined net of lies, which creates a false image of her. She believes in this imaginary world, and as soon as there is the slightest sign of destruction, she seems to be lost, and her nervous condition worsens. Therefore all she cares about is to keep that image alive. Her first name is therefore quite ironic since it means the exact opposite of Blanche’s true nature and character. Her last name, however, stands in contrast to her first name. Made of wood suggests something solid and hard, which is the exact opposite of her fragile nature and nervous condition. Wood can also be associated with forest or jungle, and regarding her past, the connection becomes clear. Blanche indulges in a rather excessive lifestyle. She has sex with random strangers and is known throughout her hometown of Laurel for that. Her former life is more like a jungle or a forest, because it is hard to see through all this and detect the real Blanche. As in a jungle, Blanche cannot find a way out of this on her own. The term jungle appears in the play as well. In scene ten, when Stanley is about to rape Blanche, â€Å"the inhuman jungle voices rise up† (Sc.10 p. 2130). The jungle can be associated with wildness, brutality and inhuman behavior. As mentioned about, wood represents something hard, or hard working. The Du in front of that however, suggests something

Compare the Techniques Of My First Sonne and Limbo Essay

When looking at the two poems it is clear that On my First Sonne is composed to deal with a father losing his seven year old son. While in comparison the poet Brathwaite is highlighting the topic of slavery. When comparing the two poems it is quite noticeable that they deal with life issues of death and sadness. However, once studying the two poems it is quite noticeable that both poems distinguish and highlight religion. This is highlighted in Limbo as it say’s in the last line â€Å"on the burning ground.† Which can be clearly suggested that it is portraying the Christian image of Hell. Which can be defined as a place where you’re in torture, which relates to the life of an African Slave where there struggling for life in places e.g. the sugar plantations. In On My First Sonne it’s communicating to the reader about religion like Limbo. However, instead of comparing religion to torture, it is discussing can people envy his son because he’s going to heaven? This is particularly shown in the following line where he leaves a question mark â€Å"Will man lament the state he should envie?† Looking at both the poems there’s a huge contrast in there individuality and uniqueness. This is clearly shown through the way that both the poems are written. For example, Limbo is presented in free verse which is probably suggesting that the slaves once had an identity. The word â€Å"Limbo† emphasises that the free verse is trying to show that the slaves were his ancestors with an African past. However, Brathwaite is presenting that the slave dealers stripped his ancestors of an identity for example â€Å"the dumb Gods are raising me.† Showing that the poet has no knowledge of Africans God’s or culture. While in contrast, the techniques used in On My First Sonne shows a traditional English poem about his love to his son. It is also writing about the English tradition of the Church of England and an identity about what it is to be English. Which during it’s time was to believe in the old tradition of religion and heaven. Which when comparing the two it is noticeable that On My First Sonne show’s identity and Limbo conveys lost identity. On My First Sonne it uses Trochaic pentameter in order to create the feeling of sadness by the use of a stressed and then a unstressed syllable. By using this technique it creates a feeling that the author is clueless which is shown through sentences like â€Å"Will man lament the state he should envie?† Limbo also uses Trochaic pentameter in order to create the feeling of sadness as the poem is talking about the struggle of slavery â€Å"long dark deck and the water surrounding me.† When looking at the tenses of On My First Sonne it uses past, present and future. For example in the first four lines there is a use of past. This is shown as he talks about his seven year old child and uses in the last sentence â€Å"on the just day.† It then changes to present, as the poet talks about in the next four lines â€Å"Will man lament the state he should envie?† suggesting he should envy his son because he is in heaven. This quote also shows that he has accepted the death of his son. It then goes to future as the poet mentions in â€Å"soft peace.† This poem shows to the reader that the poet wrote this poem over a long period of time. Showing to the reader the past represents that his child died, the present in between lines is mentioning the child’s burial and the future is that the child is buried and now in heaven. In Limbo there is a use of only present tense and repetition of the title â€Å"limbo†. This technique is used to make the poem capture the audience and get into the character of a slave. Furthermore, the use of repetition creates a tempo and the beat is indicated as it uses the word â€Å"drummers†. However, in On My First Sonne there is a use of punctuation to create the tempo meaning the audience are less involved with the poem. In conclusion this essay shows to the reader the background of the poems one to do with slavery and another to do with England and the Church of England of faith. Furthermore, I’m showing how both poems contrast and how language is used to show tempo and contrast.

Designing Promotional Strategies Based on the Target Audience

Promotional Strategy #1: Target Audience - African-American women (18-30). Product Fitness/Exercise Products. The vast majority of African-American consumer spending is done by females. It is estimated that black female buying power is upwards of $565 billion (Buying Power, 2008). This consumer group is still highly untapped. In regards to fitness and exercise products, many studies cite that women of African descent have lower physical activity levels and/or are more sedentary, than White counterparts resulting in compromised life quality and reduced life expectancy (Townes Hughes, 2004). One way to tap into this market segment is to target black media. A study conducted by Black America Today found that on average, African-Americans are more than twice as likely to trust black media over mainstream media (Jeffries Jumaralli, 2006). Popular outlets include BET, TVOne, and the Aspire Television Network. Over 81% of all African-Americans aged 18-55 watch black-interest TV channels weekly and 68% are active on African-American media sites, about the same percentage of Americans as a whole (B uying Power, 2008). However, marketing should not be exclusive to black media. Other channels should also be included, but with creative that makes a personal and/or cultural connection.
